During their exile in the Dandaka forest, Lord Rama and Lakshmana were lured away from their hermitage, leaving Sita alone. Seizing the opportunity, the demon king Ravana abducted Sita and fled toward the south in his aerial chariot. As Sita cried out for help, her pleas reached Jatayu, the aged King of Vultures and a loyal friend of Rama’s father. Despite his old age and Ravana’s immense power, Jatayu did not hesitate. He soared into the heavens and intercepted the chariot, engaging the ten-headed demon in a ferocious mid-air battle. Jatayu fought with incredible valor, shattering Ravana's bow, killing his mules, and destroying the chariot. Seeing his escape hindered, a desperate Ravana drew his divine sword and severed Jatayu’s wings. The noble bird fell to the earth, mortally wounded. When Rama and Lakshmana arrived in their frantic search for Sita, they found the dying Jatayu. With his final breaths, he informed Rama of the abduction and the direction Ravana had taken. Deeply moved by this selfless act, Rama performed Jatayu’s last rites with the same devotion he would have shown his own father, King Dasharatha.
