Story Summary
Experience the Slavic legend of Koschei the Deathless. Join Prince Ivan on an epic quest to rescue Marya Morevna and destroy the sorcerer’s hidden soul.
Prince Ivan Tsarevich married the warrior queen Marya Morevna. While she was away at war, Ivan explored her castle and ignored her warning never to enter a specific dungeon. There, he found a withered old man chained to a wall. The man, Koschei the Deathless, begged for water. When Ivan gave him three buckets, Koschei’s magical strength returned. He shattered his chains, vanished in a whirlwind, and kidnapped Marya. Ivan pursued them but was killed and later resurrected by his brothers-in-law. To defeat the immortal sorcerer, Ivan journeyed to find the 'Death of Koschei.' Guided by animals he had treated with kindness, Ivan reached the island of Buyan. Under a great oak, he unearthed a chest. A hare ran out, but Ivan’s hound caught it. A duck flew out, but Ivan’s falcon struck it down. An egg fell into the sea, but a fish returned it. Ivan broke the egg, found the needle inside, and snapped the tip. At that moment, the mighty Koschei collapsed and turned to dust. Ivan rescued Marya, and they returned home in peace.
The Moral
Even the most powerful evil has a hidden weakness, and kindness to others often provides the help needed to find it.
“My death is far away: at the tip of a needle, in an egg, in a duck, in a hare, in a chest, beneath an oak.”
Fun Fact
Koschei is widely considered the literary ancestor of the 'Lich,' a fantasy trope featuring undead sorcerers who hide their souls in phylacteries.
