Story Summary
Journey into the Mayan underworld in The Descent to Xibalba. Follow the Hero Twins as they outsmart the Lords of Death through courage and divine cunning.
The Hero Twins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque, were masters of the sacred ballgame. Their rhythmic playing echoed deep into the underworld, Xibalba, infuriating the Lords of Death, One Death and Seven Death. The Lords sent four owl messengers to summon the boys to a game they were never meant to survive. Armed with wisdom and cunning, the twins entered the 'Place of Fear.' They crossed rivers of blood and pus, outsmarting every trap set for them. In the Dark House, they used fireflies on their cigars to make them appear lit without burning them. In the Razor House, they spoke to the blades, convincing them to stay still. Even when a bat decapitated Hunahpu in the Bat House, Xbalanque used a gourd to temporarily replace his brother’s head. Knowing the Lords intended to burn them, the twins jumped into a great fire, but this was their final trick. They were reborn as traveling entertainers who could perform miracles of resurrection. When the captivated Lords of Death asked to be killed and revived themselves, the twins performed the sacrifice but refused the resurrection. Thus, the pride of Xibalba was broken, and the twins ascended to the sky to become the sun and the moon.
