The Appropriate Memorial

A high public functionary having died, the citizens of his town held a meeting to consider how to honor his memory. An other high public functionary rose and addressed the assembly.

"Mr. Chairman and gentlemen," said the other, "it seems to me, and I'm hoping you will approve the suggestion, that an appropriate way to honor the memory of the deceased would be to erect a monument suitably inscribed with his virtues."

As he spoke, the soul of the great man looked down from Heaven and wept.
