“How are you getting on, brother?” the man called out to the serpent, all the while keeping his eyes fixed on the lion.
“Admirably,” replied the snake. “My success is assured; my victim draws nearer and nearer despite her efforts to escape.”
“And mine,” said the man, “draws nearer and nearer in spite of my efforts. Are you sure this is the right approach?”
“If you don’t think so,” the reptile replied, his mouth full of bird, “you’d better give it up.”
A half-hour later, the lion, thoughtfully picking his teeth with his claws, remarked to the rattlesnake that he had never, in all his varied experiences of being subdued, seen someone try so earnestly to give it up. “But,” he added with a wide, significant smile, “I managed to look him in the eye.”
