To fulfill a further promise of a ritual gift, the King, now a pauper, traveled to the holy city of Kashi with his wife, Taramati, and their young son, Rohitashwa. To pay the debt, Harishchandra was forced to sell his wife and son into domestic servitude and sell himself to a keeper of the cremation grounds. He spent his days collecting fees for funeral pyres, living in absolute poverty. The ultimate trial came when Rohitashwa died from a snake bite. Taramati brought the body to the cremation ground, but Harishchandra, bound by his professional duty and the truth, refused to cremate his own son until the tax was paid. Impressed by such incomparable integrity, the gods and Sage Vishwamitra appeared, declaring Harishchandra the greatest witness to Truth. They restored his son to life and returned his kingdom, immortalizing his name as 'Satyavadi Harishchandra'.
