When his sixteenth birthday arrived, Markandeya went to the seashore and built a Shiva Lingam out of sand. As the hour of his death approached, Yama, the God of Death, arrived on his buffalo to claim the boy's soul. Terrified but resolute, Markandeya threw his arms around the Lingam, surrendering his life to Shiva. Yama cast his noose to pull the boy away, but the loop accidentally encircled the Shiva Lingam as well. Angered by this assault on his symbol, Lord Shiva erupted from the Lingam in a terrifying form. He struck down Yama and declared that Markandeya would remain sixteen forever, becoming a 'Chiranjeevi' or immortal. Yama was later restored to life, but Markandeya had successfully conquered death through absolute faith.
